With all the recent changes brought on by the EPA, it can be hard to try and figure out what works best for your home. One of the options that seems to be growing in popularity in the Hampton Roads area is the Ductless Mini-Split.
Now you might ask, "What is the difference between a ductless AC unit and a Mini-Split?" Not much, as it turns out. Let's look at what separates them.
A ductless air conditioner and a mini-split air conditioner are essentially the same thing, as both refer to a type of air conditioning system that does not require ductwork to circulate air. However, the term "ductless air conditioner" is more general and can refer to any type of air conditioning system that doesn't use ducts. This includes window air conditioners and portable air conditioners.
On the other hand, a "mini-split" air conditioner is a specific type of ductless air conditioner that consists of an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor units by a small conduit. They are "split" between two spaces. The indoor units can be mounted on the wall, ceiling, or floor, and they blow cool air into the room directly. Mini-split air conditioners are typically more energy-efficient than central air conditioning systems because they don't lose energy through ductwork.
That being said, mini-splits have several ways they can be incorporated into your home. The first being that they are considered ideal if you have built an addition, converting your garage, or are looking to cool your She Shed, and dont have the option or space for ductwork to be installed. They can also be utilized to cool the whole home - your choice!
There are MANY advantages to these types of systems. For instance, you may find yourself renovating your garage into a spare bedroom ensuite. It may be more cost effective to install a mini-split as opposed to a full system upgrade including duct work. Or you may want your AirBnB guests to have the availability to heat and cool their room temperatures individually. In addition, a few of the following are the most popular reasons:
Many models can handle up to four zones which means that each room can be indivually climate controlled. Ideal for a Bed and Breakfast or home that accommodates guests OR the homeowner that closes off certain areas of the house to conserve energy. It affords a home or business owner a huge flexibility.
